Should I buy a Mac or PC?

This is a matter of personal preference. Both platforms are fully supported on campus and operate well together. Last year, Back 2 School purchases from the UR Tech Store were split 95% Mac and 5% PC.

Should I buy a laptop or desktop?

With the increasing use of technology on campus, many find the portability of a laptop to be convenient. There are many spots on campus where students can access the wireless network, work on assignments, or find a quiet place to study. Last year, Back 2 School purchases from the UR Tech Store were 93% laptops.

When will I receive my order?

Orders can be shipped to you or picked up at one of our retail stores.

What software is recommended on campus?

The UR Tech Store recommends that every student have an office suite such as Microsoft Office for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. Microsoft Office is provided to all students at no additional cost. Details, including download instructions, can be found on the University IT website.

In addition, certain majors may require specific programs. We recommend contacting your department directly to inquire about these. Many of these applications can be accessed in one of the University's Computer Labs.

Additional software available to students can be found on the Software Site Licensing webpage.

Do I need to bring my own printer to school?

The University operates a pay for print service that allows you to print at various locations around campus. If you prefer the convenience of having your own personal printer, we will have printers available for purchase at our retail location in Rush Rhees Library.

What are some ways I can protect my computer?

The University provides FREE antivirus software for all students. Additional information, including download instructions, can be found on the University IT website

In the event of a hard drive failure, data can be difficult and costly to recover. Manufacturer warranties do not provide coverage for this recovery. The UR Tech Store recommends regular backups to an external hard drive.

The UR Tech Store recommends using a locking device to secure your computer when it's in a common area. These types of devices cannot guarantee against theft, but act as an effective deterrent if properly used.

Purchasing an extended service plan, such as a Safeware Protection Plan with Accidental Damage and Theft Coverage, is a great way to add additional protection not offered by most manufacturer warranties.

What network connectivity will I have on campus?

Wireless connectivity (URWireless) is available in many common areas of the River Campus. This network can be accessed using your University NetID. Additional information on URWireless, including a coverage map, can be found on the University IT website.

All University dorm rooms provide each occupant with a wired connection to the network. This connection will provide faster transfer speeds and a reliable back up to the wireless network. Ethernet cables are not provided and can be purchased in various lengths at our stores.

For more information on student networking, please vist the ResNet webpage.

Where can I learn more about additional technology offerings available to me?

The University IT website are great places to find out about all the technology offerings at the University of Rochester.

The UR Tech Store partners with a local service company to offer warranty and non-warranty repairs. Students can drop off their systems at either of our retail locations during normal business hours. Students are not required to purchase a computer from the UR Tech Store to take advantage of this service. However, please be aware that some manufacturer warranties set restrictions on who can provide service.
